| The Selah House came about as a result of the vision of our Founder, Misty Rees. Misty has been certified by the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals (IAEDP) as a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, a rigorous certification process involving many hours of specialized study and 4000 hours of supervised therapy. Misty is the first of only a few to be certified in the state of Indiana on eating disorders (CEDS). This is her personal message: |

“I know from personal experience that eating disorders breed one thing above all others: hopelessness. This monster we call 'Ed' literally takes over our lives and consumes us, 24 hours a day. Its grip is so strong that it seems impossible to overcome. So we fall into despair and hopelessness, and many of us do not even want to live any more. I know--I was there."
“In the depths of my despair, the thing that turned me around and gave me hope was not a medicine, not a book, not a specific therapeutic technique (although all of these things had their place and were helpful). The turning point for me was a simple act of love and faith from my family physician. He was honest and real enough with me to admit that he did not know how to help me. So he asked if he could just pray for me instead."
“From this simple act of love and faith, something stirred inside of me. I awakened to the sobering realization that my life was out of control, that I could not control my life through 'Ed' and that instead, 'Ed' was controlling me. I took the first step of surrender, the first of many steps that led to my ultimate freedom."
“Over the years I became increasingly convinced that my calling in life is to help others find their way to freedom from the devastating and crippling effects of eating disorders. For me, the gift that God gave me in freeing me from this prison is a gift that I now want to give over and over again to others. As God has blessed me, so would I like to be a blessing to those who are walking the path that I once walked. And this desire is not just mine; several members of our eating disorder treatment team also have overcome eating disorders in their own lives, giving them a similar sense of mission to help others. This is not just a job to us, it is a calling."
“At Selah House we still respect and utilize time-tested, science-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioral and family therapy as well as art, equine, and dance and movement therapies. All of these approaches contribute to healing and change. But, we go a step further; a step that we believe is crucial to deep, lasting healing and ultimate freedom. Simply put, we love our residents. Not with just our own love, but with the love of the God who first loved us. We provide a space for them to just be who they really are, not who they have come to believe they are. In this space of unconditional love, a seed of trust is planted. We have been privileged over and over again to watch these seeds take root and grow, as women who were once filled with sorrow, shame and self-hate transform into the strong, healthy and happy women that God intended them to be."
“If you are in that place of hopelessness and despair, my message to you is this: there is hope. You can be healed from this, you can be free. Others have walked this path before you, and we are here now to help you find your way to freedom. You are important to us. You are worth it. May God bless you richly on your journey.”
